Great Hair Fridays - September 1941

Well friends, fall has finally arrived. I can't believe September is almost over! This year is just flying by. And now the days are getting shorter and cooler. It's with mixed feelings that I'm starting to pull out my sweaters and wool socks. I love the fall but I'm always sad to see summer end. Ah well....

For today's Great Hair Fridays post, I bring you more from the magazine Modern Beauty Shop. This issue is from September 1941. I absolutely adore the little felt hat on the cover.

This is an interesting take on pin curls - Pin Curls with a Half Twist! I think my hair is too long for this, I have enough trouble with regular pin curls! Someone please give it a try and let me know how it works.

This image I posted awhile back when I first started my Great Hair Fridays series. But it's a great one and so very worth sharing again. I've posted a couple times about victory rolls. (Here and here) and have attempted them with my own hair a few times as well. (see here) Obviously there are more hair styles then just victory rolls for the 1940s, but for anyone wanting to create a classic, and classy, WWII era up-do learning to make victory rolls is a must. :)

Announcing My Portfolio Page

Hi everyone,
I hope you are all having a lovely week. I'd like to share with you all today my new portfolio page. On this page you will find links to some of my finished projects as well as details on some of the items in my vintage collection. I have lots of different things I can post about. I just need to find the extra time to take photographs, measurements and such. What are people most interested in? Clothing, shoes, accessories? Just let me know!

I have a post in the works now on a 1920s rhinestone flapper dress that, although in sad shape, is still stunning after all these years. What a sneak peak? I thought you might! ;)

This is the same photo I'm using for my Facebook banner as well as the photo link for following me on bloglovin.
I've had a lot of fun using PicMonkey to create various photo collages.

And just for fun, here is a collage of photos showing some of the different historical hairstyles I've attempted. I shared this one on my Facebook page awhile back but didn't post it here. That's all for now!

Boardwalk Empire - Men's Suits

Ok, so I'm a little behind in watching historical costume flicks. Lately I've been watching Boardwalk Empire. I've seen all of the first season and only have a couple episodes left to watch of season two. This show is awesome! And I can't tell you have nice it is to have a show to watch where the men's clothing is just as good, if not better, then the women's. No lie. The suit in Boardwalk Empire are fantastic. Lots of plaids and stripes in all kinds of colors. The man character, Nucky Thompson played by Steve Buscemi, wears some of the best suits.

I really like Jimmy Darmody's blue suit seen below. It's too bad more guys don't dress like this today.

Shop My Closet

Greetings everyone. I finally did it, I've opened a shop on Etsy!! EmilysVintageVisions (Oddly enough the shop name My Vintage Visions was already taken. This is part of the reason I changed my blog name back in the spring.) I wanted to share this good news with everyone here first before making an announcement on my Facebook page. I've opened the shop in part because of my love of vintage and historic sewing. But also because Cori and I need to save some money for our wedding next October. :)

I only have a few things in the shop at the moment but will be adding more items in the near future. Eventually I will be adding some clothing I have made so there will be a mixture of actual vintage and vintage style/inspired items. There are a couple new dresses in the works right now! FYI - If there is any interest in purchasing one of the dresses I made from my vintage patterns and posted about here on my blog, send me a message. I might be willing to part with it.

Lately, I've been going through my collection of vintage and antique stuff and I am forcing myself to part with items that either don't fit or I don't use or wear. The items I currently have listed are perfect examples. The black 1940s Red Cross Company shoes are about a 1/2 size too big otherwise I would be keeping them. :( Some of you may recognize them from the article I wrote on vintage shoes for issue 2 of Hey Doll! Vintage Magazine. The green shoes in the picture below were also featured in my article. Sorry other shoes pictured are not for sale.

I love this 1950s/60s floral frock but sadly it's too small so it has to go! The waist is about 24".

This is perfect for spring!! 1950s/60s floral dress now on Etsy
The last item in my shop is this 1950 cotton skirt. I love it and it fits great but as it has been in my closet for over a year and I have yet to wear it ... so into the shop it goes!

As I add additional items to my shop I will post them here. Until I get a handle of selling online I have decided not to ship outside the United States. My apologies to my readers who live outside the U.S. However, if at any time you see something in the shop that you are really interested in purchasing send me message and I will try to figure out a shipping cost.

Updates - A Little of this and That

Hello all,
Last week was a busy week of blogging for me. I've read all your wonderful comments about my time traveling adventures. If you missed those posts you and check them out here, here, and here. I also received emails from two of my lovely readers. Thank you! I really enjoy reading your questions and hearing your thoughts on sewing and vintage pretties! Please keep them coming. :) In contrast, my Labor Day weekend was very quite. The only adventure to speak of was checking out a wedding venue the parents. I'm 99% sure its the place but until we sign the contract I'm keeping silent. Don't worry, I'll have a post or two about our wedding preparations soon. :)

I have a few things to tell you about today. I've updated my Resources and Inspiration page with new sources for patterns, vintage clothing, and more! If you know of a blog, shop, or other resource I should list, send me an email and I will be happy to add it.

These are just a few of the shops I've added:

In other news, the pre-order for the newest American Duchess shoe is open. The Claremont is a lovely 1930s style shoe in brown. The pre-order is available until September 22. I'm so happy these are brown!
