This is What He Does on Weekends

Those of you who have been following my blog for awhile now will recognize Cori and will know that he enjoys dressing up as much as I do. We often attend living history events and reenactments together which is more fun then going on my own. It's not all that unusual to come home and find him wearing some part of one of his uniforms. Cori loves his navy Dixie cup hat and dungarees, although lately he has been wearing his reproduction WWI British service dress cap around the house. He just ordered a full reproduction uniform, complete with boots and all the gear, for a WWI portrayal. Because, clearly, we need another time period to reenact ....

Anyway, we have been working on putting together a WWII era navy shore patrol uniform. There are still a couple things missing; the black and white SP (shore patrol) armband for example. These are some photos we took last fall when it was still nice and warm outside.

Research is key!

We wanted to try and duplicate some WWII era recruiting posters. The first is a poster from 1939 illustrated by McClelland Barclay. The second was illustrated by C. Carleton. I couldn't find any additional information.

And here are the results. Not too bad but I'd like to redo the democracy one at some point in the future.

Here's a peak at some of his uniforms. The plastic tote is not ideal at all for textile storage but works for right now. Some time I will twist Cori's arm into writing a guest post or two. He could tell you way more about his uniform collection then I can. There are pieces that date from WWI up to the 1970s.

Uniforms in storage.
Non-regulation "Liberty" uniform. I think this one is 1950s, not sure.
And a few more pictures just for fun. :)

This one is one of my favorites from the group. The sea bag is a reproduction but the uniform is all original 1940s vintage.

Ready for shore leave!

Some Engagement Photos!

At last, I have some engagement photos to share with you all! Cori and I have been engaged since last January but didn't get around to having photos done until this fall. It was a very chilly October day, especially with the wind off the lake. I'm so glad I had my fur cape. A HUGE thank you to Cori's mom for taking these! Sadly, I can't share the locations of our photo shoot because its all private property. We had to get special permission to take the photos, and on top of that I can only share some of them. I can say though, that it's a place Cori spent a lot of time at when he was younger and it's one of the first places he took me to when we started dating. So needless to say its special to both of us. We actually considered one spot as a location for our wedding but logistically there was no way to make it work.

Anyway, on to the photos!

Check out Cori's amazing 1940s pinstripe suit from Morning Glorious Vintage! It's 3 separate pieces and royal blue with little white pinstripes. This is the one I mentioned he bought when we went to the Roaring 20s Lawn Party back in July. We couldn't believe how well it fit, it was as though the suit were made just for him. He is planning to wear it for our wedding which will be a 1940s theme. How perfect is that?

I love my little black dress from Wildfell Hall Vintage. What I thought were little side drapes on the dress turned out to be pockets! That was a nice little surprise. :) It's hard to see in the pictures but the waist area is trimmed with red, blue, and green sequins in a flower design. My shoes came from Honey Talk Vintage. The shop had an awesome 50% off sale this fall. I've worn them a couple times now and they are super comfortable!

We also had the chance to visit will a family friend who graciously allowed us to take a few photos with his antique cars. One of which was a dark green 1930s REO Speed Wagon. So cool!

Boardwalk Empire - Men's Suits

Ok, so I'm a little behind in watching historical costume flicks. Lately I've been watching Boardwalk Empire. I've seen all of the first season and only have a couple episodes left to watch of season two. This show is awesome! And I can't tell you have nice it is to have a show to watch where the men's clothing is just as good, if not better, then the women's. No lie. The suit in Boardwalk Empire are fantastic. Lots of plaids and stripes in all kinds of colors. The man character, Nucky Thompson played by Steve Buscemi, wears some of the best suits.

I really like Jimmy Darmody's blue suit seen below. It's too bad more guys don't dress like this today.
